Fun with Budgets

Good news is our upper level bureaucracy had its wages frozen (although in bureaucracy speak, that probably only means they will receive a reduction of their anticipated wage increase). Bad news is our three-year library reconstruction project, which finally got underway last semester, has been frozen. Ironically, a move that was intended to save money will end up costing the university money, since it's going to have to pay off the contractors to avoid a lawsuit.

Meanwhile, a mischievous colleague, who is usually wrong anyway, wondered aloud whether wage freezes would have an effect on tenure and promotion. Not a pleasant thought to contemplate.

So how are things outside of the lamentably goldless Golden State?

Unfortunately, all that sounds familiar. We are looking at a $7m budget cut over the next three years. The first casualty in the Foreign Languages department was the French search, now canceled
(but not before I and my two colleagues had read through dozens of applicant files).

If it gets really bad, then our single faculty programs could be on the chopping block (German, Russian, ASL, or Chinese).

I hope the state-wide pay freeze will not be applied to me when I go up next year. The pay raise should be protected by the collective bargaining agreement. I assume Cal Sate faculty are similarly protected.

Yes, I believe we are protected. I allowed myself to become briefly paranoid.

Sounds familiar. Lyon is postponing (for how long?) their retirement contribution, not hiring, and possibly laying off two tenure track faculty in addition to most adjunct instructors. Our endowment took a big hit, and the line of credit that the admin. has been relying on is not being renewed. So the admin is searching for 1.6 mil to take out of next year's budget. Good news is that there won't be any programs cut and we have a record number of freshman coming in next year. (The pres. finally saw to it that his attempts at recruitment and admissions failed, so we got a new guy in here who looks promising. We're also supposed to get a new pres). Travel and divisional funds are still available. Tuition is going up 5% for new and returning students.
