propriety
What do you guys think of using the word 'shit' in academic papers? I'm citing in Spanish, but providing a translation in footnotes, and frankly, I can't think of a better way to write or talk about the use of the word 'cagar.' 'Crap' sounds too much like a euphemism, and 'excrement' sounds like I'm trying too hard to not say 'shit.' At the same time, I don't want to contribute to the continued degradation of academic discourse by being too cute with my use of four-letter words.

How about "to take a dump"?
As part of my paper on the parodic falconry manual, I'm touching briefly and peripherally, on some scatological references. Somehow, "take a dump," while vivid and to the point, doesn't quite convey the right mood.
Well, I thought I'd give it my best shot...
I've heard the word used in a job talk once. Pretty gutsy move. I think it's ok to use it, but maybe one time in the paper?
How about "lay a log" or "pinch off a loaf"?
But seriously, I think it's good as long as you contextualize it appropriately in proper critical discourse.
I agree with Dave and Kent, but I would write a footnote to explain your choice.
